Pepecoin ($PEP) is a meme-based cryptocurrency that traces its origins to 2015, making it one of the earliest Pepe-themed tokens to appear on-chain. The project was first introduced with the domain pepecoin.ga, which remains active to this day, providing a direct link to its original release. While another project known as Memetic/PepeCoin was launched in 2016, the 2015 version of Pepecoin predates it and is recognized as the original on-chain Pepe coin.

On September 8, 2025, Pepecoin was relaunched on the Solana blockchain, re-establishing its presence in the current meme-driven market cycle. The decision to deploy on Solana reflects the network’s high throughput, low transaction costs, and growing role as a hub for meme assets and cultural tokens. The relaunch did not alter the fundamental ethos of the project: Pepecoin remains a community-driven, utility-free token designed as a cultural symbol rather than a financial instrument.

The Pepe meme has a long-standing presence in internet culture, originating in the mid-2000s and later evolving into one of the most recognizable and replicated memes online. By 2015, Pepecoin was launched as an experimental cryptocurrency, marking the first attempt to formally connect the cultural impact of Pepe with blockchain technology. This was followed by the emergence of Memetic/PepeCoin in 2016, which continued independently.

In 2022, Pepe experienced a new surge in popularity as part of the Ethereum meme token boom, where multiple projects leveraging the character reached significant market capitalizations. While these later tokens captured widespread attention, the relaunch of the 2015-originated Pepecoin in 2025 highlights its role as the “genesis” Pepe asset and brings the project back into public view with its verified historical foundation.
